This year, during the month of December, the employees of Foster Fuels decided to collect nonperishable food items for an organization called B.E.A.M.—B.E.A.M. is Brookneal Emergency Assistance Ministry. We provide food for families in need. We also have fuel assistance, medicine assistance, and also with electric bills.

Foster Fuels decided to donate to B.E.A.M. because it’s an organization—a Christian ministry organization—in our Brookneal community. All kinds of people come to B.E.A.M. We have families that move into the area and have need, and we have long-time residents. We have some that have been coming to B.E.A.M. for several years in a row, and we always serve them no matter how many times they’ve been coming. There’s paper products that we give away: paper towels and toilet paper. We take in laundry powder and those types of things to give families as well.

Big items that are not donated very often are formula, diapers, paper products. They do have year-round needs for peanut butter, jelly, and canned meats, which are not donated a lot. The biggest need is food. We are not government funded, so we also receive funds from individuals, and churches, and businesses in the community. They accept donations locally at The Golden Skillet, so people can come in if you cannot make it to their food pantry to drop items off.

You can get involved by praying for B.E.A.M., but you can also volunteer, and you can also donate food, or you can donate money to B.E.A.M. It’s not just Christmas and Thanksgiving. People sometimes forget during the summer. Kids are out of school. They’re not getting their hot lunch, you know, their breakfast. All year round, kids are in need. It’s not just during the holidays. So, sometimes people forget about that. We’re just very blessed to have community support, and we appreciate all of it.
